Sweet corn resistance to the ear rots caused by Fusarium graminearum and F. verticillioides
Kernel sugar content and ear rots resistance are among essential traits for commercial sweet corn production. The objectives of this study were to evaluate hybrids with sugary (su1) and shrunken (sh2) endosperm types for ear rots resistance and to determine the relationship between kernel sugar content and ear rots resistance. Hybrids were inoculated with conidial suspensions of F. graminearum and F. verticillioides in 2005 and 2006. Significant effects of environment and genotype were obtained for car rots severity and kernel sugar content. Generally, hybrids with sh2 endosperm type were more susceptible to car rots than hybrids with sill endosperm type. Ear rots were positively but weakly associated with kernel sugar content. Since resistance to car rots is not closely associated with kernel Sugar content improvement in sweet corn should be done with respect to both traits.
