Biological control of surface mines and landfills during the construction of Croatian highways

This paper deals with the issue of biological control of surface mines and landfills on the Maslenica – Zadar 1 section of the motorway. In the past several years spatial planning of motorway routes has been given considearable attention. Unfortunately, the construction of motorways is closely connected with the disturbance of the stability of the ecosystems through which they pass, thus giving this issue prime importance from the ecological standpoint. In choosing a motorway route utmost care is taken not to disturb the nature. Despite this, treatments in the space lead to changes in the landscape, which has to be restored to its original scenic, ecological and aesthetic functions. Research was conducted in the locations of Rovanjska (about 300 m south of the settlement of the same name and the Velebit Channel at the foot of Velebit) and of Posedarje, situated immediately along the south side of the Split – Zagreb motorway. The terrain containing the surface mine and the construction material landfills has typical karst morphology. Heavier rainfall causes surface runoff and surface erosion. Immediately next to the landfill there is the Novigrad Sea. The paper discusses natural features of the study area: geological and hydrological characteristics, climatic conditions and vegetational characteristics. Some basic principles of biological control are analysed. The authors supply a list of forest tree species, shrubs, semi-shrubs and climbers to be biologically restored and deals with planting methods per locations. A scheme of afforestation has been made for both locations. By applying ameliorative measures of afforestating and planting greens in the area, erosion will be prevented and the scenic and visual value of the landscape enhanced.
