Settlement of a reservoir founded on bored piles
A reservoir of heavy fuel oil with the capactiy of 60 000 cubic meters was constructed on the soft aluvial foundation soil having unfavorable geotechnical characteristics in the vicinity of a river. The reservoir foundation consists of 321 bored cast in place piles beneath a slab which transfer the loads to the stiff clay layer. The foundation soil settlements were monitored at 16 locations on the slab edge during a hydraulic loading test. Two typical settlement curves are presented in the paper and used to back-calculate the values of the undrained elastic modulus of the stiff clay, which are compared to those obtained from the unconfined compression and oedometer tests. It is shown that these tests greatly underestimate the stiffness of stiff slightly overconsolidated clay at small strains.
