Response of lucerne to inoculation in organic production

Lucerne (Medicago sativa L.) is a protein-rich and most sown perennial fodder legume in Republic Croatia, this fodder crop only in symbiosis with appropriate strain (Sinorhizobium meliloti) can perform biological fixation of atmospheric nitrogen. The aim of this research was to determine the effect of lucerne seed bacterization with an effective strain Sinorhizobium meliloti in organic production. The research was conducted from vegetation year 2005 to 2006 in four repetitions on ecological family farm on hipogley type of soil with previous fertilization with mature stable manure in amount of 30 t ha-1. Research results show that lucerne inoculated with highly effective strain Sinorhizobium meliloti gave significantly higher total average green mass yield of 56.1 t ha-1 (p<0.001), and average dry matter yield of 15.9 t ha-1 (p<0.001). Protein yield in total was 3.1 t ha-1 in 2005 (p<0.001). In the second research year inoculated lucerne gave significantly higher total average green mass yield of 56.7 t ha-1 (p<0.001), average dry matter yield which was also higher and amounted to 13.4 t ha-1 (p<0.001). Protein yield was significantly higher in inoculated lucerne and amounted to 2.7 t ha-1 (p<0.001). Content of phosphorus and potassium and percentage of fat, fibres and ashes showed no difference between inoculated and noninoculated lucerne. We can conclude that presowing inoculation of lucerne seed with highly effective strain Sinorhizobium meliloti is necessary in achieving higher sustainable yields. At the same time, nitrogen fixated through root nodules of leguminous plants is a cheaper, more natural and more efficient way of host plant nitrogen exploitation.
