Characteristics of Combustion of Ethanol Fuelled HCCI Engine
With the ever increasing demands regarding fuel consumption, harmful emissions and the emissions of CO2, HCCI combustion is getting more and more attention every day. Besides its potential of achieving low emission of NOx and high overall efficiency, HCCI combustion has a possibility to use different fuels. Since the strategy of modern society is to develop power systems that can use renewable fuels, it maybe of interest to exploit a HCCI combustion with some sort of biofuel. Since ethanol produced from biosources is a biofuel, in this paper the analysis of combustion characteristics of ethanol fuelled HCCI engine is made. For that purpose a previously developed six zone simulation model of a HCCI combustion which uses chemical kinetics is used. With this simulation model the changes of combustion behaviour, when the isooctane fuel (gasoline representative) is changed with the ethanol, are analysed. Also the necessary changes to the boundary conditions for obtaining approximately same combustion parameters are calculated, together with the changes of the produced emissions.
