Biomarker assays to assess modified environmental factors affecting freshwater crayfish Astacus leptodactylus : physiological, immunological, and genotoxic responses
The main objective of this work was to determine the genotoxic effects of freshwater pollution on freshwater crayfish Astacus leptodactylus. Crayfish were exposed at two locations of different pollution intensity in River Sava and on a control site in River Mrežnica. In order to employ biomarkers of genotoxicity (Comet assay and micronucleus test) in biological effects monitoring a better understanding of their values under stress induced through changes of different physico-chemical parameters (temperature, air exposure) and physiological processes (starvation) was also investigated. Apart from Comet assay and micronucleus test, a battery of physiological parameters (THC, DHC, clotting time, haemolypmh pH, density, proteins, lactate and glucose) was used to evaluate the stress response of A. leptodactylus.
