Quality of Service In Communication Networks: An Overview
In today’ s converged networks where all types of traffic (voice, data, video) traverse throughout the same network, IP protocol with « best effort» model does not support any critical type of traffic which needs by its nature, guaranteed bandwidth or delay or both. Different mechanisms involved during time resolve priority to some class of packets are presented. Well known IntServ and DffServ models are briefly explained with some advantages and constrains each model has. Basic principles of measurement technologies, tools and methods to data collection in the network are presented. Future evolution of QoS through automation of the whole process in order to reduce the costs, timeframe for deployment, standardization of installations and security improvement of the Internet is suggested.
