Low-Cost Broadband Attenuator Design

The purpose of this work was to investigate the charactristics of the several Pi attenuator circuit configurations. The attenuator circuits with one and two control voltages are investigated. Both types of the attenuators are built in microstrip technique. The extensive measurements showed that the attenuator circuit with two control voltages has better tracking ability of the desired value of attenuation and the impedance matching on both ports. The achievable attenuation range is from 0.7 dB to 33 dB with resolution of 0.1 dB. The attenuator operates in broad frequency band. It is controlled by two 14-bit D/A converters. The attenuator is intended for use in automatic phase noise measurement system.
