Case studies on Control of metal flow in Pre-chamber Dies
Metal flow is one of the basic factors influencing section quality. It depends, along with many extrusion parameters, on the section's shape as well as on the die design. Simple flat dies have been used for manufacturing solid aluminum sections. Flat die can not always satisfy very strong requirements of the market for section quality. The main disadvantage of such a die type is that the end of extruded sections can not be correctly welded to the material of the following billet. Such charge or transverse welds are important in continuos extrusion processes such as "billet on billet" extrusion since the pullers have been use in extrusion practice. In order to weld material of one billet to another one, and to allow continuous extrusions, pre-chamber (weld plate and weld pocket) dies have been introduced in the extrusion practice. This paper discusses case studies examining the control of metal flow in the weld plate and weld pocket dies for the production of solid shapes. They show a part of our experience and knowledge in die design accumulated throughout the years. The procedure for determining pre-chamber design and dimensions as a function of the section shape is shown. The results may be useful for the extrusion practice.
