IAEA Coordinated research programme on requirements for future application of advanced reactors, Progress Report, September 1985
A case study of the effect of advanced fuel cycles and improvements in PWR and PHWR reactors on the resource requirements within small or medium nuclear power programme. Preliminary analysis was performed for assumed fuel cycles and reactor types with the aim of clarifying several basic questions: 1.The effect of introduction of fast breeders into small or medium nuclear programe, i.e. from 15- 25000 MW(e). 2. The place of advanced reactors within a strategy which introduces fast breeders 3.The effect of Pu, respectively, Pu + U recycle in relation to direct fuel cycles with advanced reactors. Assuming introduction of fast breeders with plutonium generated within the system, and for selected sizes of nuclear programmes conclusion is reached that fast breeders cannot develop their ultimate potential. Uranium saving relative to Pu recycle fuel cycle is not large enough to justify their introduction.
