Comparison of Sedimentological and Geochemical Characteristics of Sediments from the Raša River Estuary and the Plomin Bay (Adriatic Sea): Evidence for Anthropogenic Influences
Two small micro-tidal and low-wave energy karstic Mediterranean environments in the north-eastern Adriatic were investigated with respect to their sedimentological and geochemical properties. Sediments from the Raša River Estuary and the Plomin Bay were examined by wet sieving and Sedigraph, X-ray diffraction (XRD), single point nitrogen adsorption (BET method), and by inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS). The results have shown that both systems were characterized by rapid sedimentation of river-borne, fine-grained material, mostly composed of clay mineral particles, in the proximity of the fresh water inlet. The nature and the physico-chemical properties of these particles influence the distribution of trace metals. Longitudinal distribution of trace metals in surface sediments from the Raša River Estuary follows the sedimentation dynamics and deposition pattern of clayey material. The highest concentrations of trace metals were found in the restricted upper part of the estuary where rapid sedimentation occurs and these concentrations decrease toward the open sea. In Plomin Bay, concentrations of trace metals are uniform across the profile, due to periodic sediment removal within the port operational system. This research is a contribution to the observation of anthropogenic influence on the natural cycling and distribution of trace metals. The results exemplify the need to apply adequate measures to minimize anthropogenic influence on sensitive karstic environments.
