Modern technology solutions for the prevention of air pollution from marine diesel engines
Regulations for the prevention of air pollution from ships were adopted in the 1997 Protocol to MARPOL 73/78 and are included in Annex VI of the Convention. The control of NOx emissions in compliance with these regulations, usually called the „ IMO regulations“ , is standard for marine engines today. Various technologies are available for reducing NOx emissions from marine diesel engines: namely the common-rail injection system, exhaust gas recirculation, selective catalytic reduction and direct water injection system. In expectation of further regulations to control SOx, CO2, smoke emissions and further lower the NOx limit, a considerable number of marine diesel engines producers have therefore long-term research programmes. Every programme must ensure that these technologies will not adversely affect engine reliability and component lifetimes. At the same time it is necessary to ensure the most desirable balance between further improved fuel economy and emissions reduction. If solving the reduction in both, "greenhouse" gases and air polluition, consideration should be given to aftertreatment of exhaust gases, such as selective catalytic reduction technology, and in very advanced marine diesel power system application (VAMDPS).
