The effect of water stress on some barley plant traits

We investigated the effects on barley plant after exposure to abiotic stress (water shortage) during early stages of plant development. The measurments and parallel analysis has been conducted about relative water content (RWC), the mass of the whole plant, leaf mass, root percentage, total root length and length of root fractions with plants exposed to stress (water defficit) and with plants which were not exposed to water defficit on 10 cultivars of winter barley. The experiment was set as two-factorriel glasshouse test on Institute for Adriatic crops and karst reclamation in Split, in three repetitions with completely randomised block spread with genotype and water stress as main factors. Average RWC measured under non-stress conditions was 97.5%, and 66.1% of RWC measured under stress. The average leaf mass in 10 cultivars measured under non-stress conditions was 174.9 mg, and 132.4 mg under stress with the whole plant mass of 238.6 mg under non- stress and 177.4 mg measured under the stress. The average root mass measured under non-stress was 63.7 mg, and 44.9 mg under the stress. The complete root length measured under non-stress was 770.65 cm, and 647.3 cm under stress. Average difference between stressful and non- stressful conditions with given factors totaled as follows: plant mass 61.2 mg, leaf mass 42.5 mg, RWC 31.4%, root mass 18.5 mg and total root length of 129 cm. Significant difference occured, between varieties bred under stressful and non-stressful conditions, in factors concerning leaf mass, plant mass, root mass and total root length.
