Project CEUBIOM and sustainable biomass use
This paper gives an overview on Framework Programme 7 project named CEUBIOM (Classification on European Biomass Potential for Bioenergy using Terrestrial and Earth Observations). The project contributes to 'Harmonization of biomass resource assessment' activities which focus on assessing and optimizing the availability of biomass resources, taking in account biomass sustainability. Within this project, a harmonized methodology will be proposed for assessing the land use/land cover and forest types, above ground biomass, carbon content and respective changes based on remote sensing data. Accessing a reliable and common dataset on biomass potential will offer a more efficient use of the available biomass feedstock and a better monitoring of sustainability as well as competitiveness aspects. Based on the identified user requirements and the methods available for combining Earth Observation and terrestrial inventory data, a concept for a harmonized approach for biomass assessment will be developed. A special attention while assessing biomass potential should be addressed to sustainable biomass use. Without it, biomass for energy use competes with biomass grown for food or as a resource in industry (paper industry, furniture… ).
