Event-related potentials in medical workers with long-term exposure to xylene
Our aim was to determine the effects of chronic exposure of low concentrations of xylene on cognitive ability. Thirty-five medical workers from a pathology department occupationally exposed to xylene through inhalation for at least five years were studied by using P300 event-related potentials. The results were compared with those obtained from the control group of 21 subjects. the exposure to xylene was confirmed through determination of m-methylhippuric acid, a reliable biological indicator of xylene , in pre- and post-shift urine. In all exposed workers, the concentrations of m-methylhippuric acid were below the biologic tolerance value of 1.500 mg/g creatinine for methylhippuric acid (o-, m-, p-) set by the American Conference of Govermental Industrial Hygientst in 1996. he group of medical workers showed significantly longer P300 log latency (p<0.01) than did the control group. For the P300 amplitude the difference was found not to be significant (p=0.263), probably due to high between subject variabiliy. The cognitive impairment may occur in workers chronically exposed to low levels of xylene.
