How Do We Cope: Towards the Knowledge Based Society of an Enlarged European Union

The authors of this paper analyse the implications of knowledge to the economies of an Enlarged European Union through the results of different indicators: • Volume of research and development (R&D) investments as GDP % • Structure of fundnigs to R&D sector • Science and technology (S&T) output as number of publications per million inhabitants • S&T output as number of people employed (FTE) in sector Those indicators are different accross the Europe and show intensity and importance of implementation of knowledge within certain national economies. It is noticable that countries investing more in R&D sector as a proportion of its GDP and countries relaying more on private investments in fundnigs of this sector are at the same time countries that are performing better: their S&T output is also much greater in terms of number of people employed in science and in scinetific publications.
