Corn Cob Ash as the Natural Adsorbent for the Elimination of Reactive Textile Dyes
Adsorption processes by using ash could be confirmed as a simple, selective and cheap alternative of the conventional physical-chemical methods of dye contaminated effluent water treatment. In this work the use of the natural adsorbent – ash – for the elimination of reactive textile dyes was investigated. The ash obtained by burning of corn cob is a very cheap material for the treatment of textile industry effluent waters, i.e. the waste waters after the dyeing process. Due to high affinity between the dye and the adsorbent successful elimination of about 60 % of dyes was achieved in some 20 minutes. The adsorption behaviour of dyes on corn cob ashes was colorimetrically monitored. The effect of the ash quantity, the initial dye concentration and the treatment time on the adsorption was investigated. The results suggest that the dye adsorption on ash as the adsorbent could be used for large-scale treatment of dye containing effluent water from textile factories.
