Advanced Fabrics In Civil Engineering

The effects of population growth, increasing transportation congestion, decaying infrastructure, shrinking waste management options, environmental deterioration, destruction from disasters, and effects of global warming represent a significant problem to mankind which must be mitigated by engineers. New solutions to these complex problems are being developed, using innovative approaches, involving the most effective technological and management techniques. Applications in the civil engineering which include new materials, different from the traditional ones, have represented the group of the so called advanced fabrics. These fabrics, developed by textile engineers, will provide improved performance and satisfy the construction market needs. In this paper an overview of these materials is given including general requirements, characteristics of the fibres and technologies used for certain applications.
