Aseismic strenghtening of masonry buildings
Quite a few existing masonry buildings, especially in historic cores of towns, are not designed or constructed in a way to be resistant to earthquakes. Most often these are brick or stone masonry buildings with lower quality mortar. Bearing walls of such buildings are often over distant and inadequately connected. Current ceiling constructions have not appropriate stiffness in its plane, and the connection with walls is inadequate. Existing ceiling constructions like timber beam floors or masonry vaults due to its stiffness do not comply to the distribution of seismic forces to walls, what is a presumption for calculating earthquake effects to modern masonry buildings with reinforced concrete ceiling systems. This paper presents some methods for aseismic strengthening of existing masonry buildings and some methods of earthquake damaged constructions reparation. Strengthening or reparation method of existing masonry buildings must often conform – in cooperation with conservators – to the value of buildings as a protected immovable cultural treasure.
