Effect of row spacing on damages caused by western corn rootworm
Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte is pest in all maize growing area in Croatia. The primary control measures are crop rotation and insecticidal application. The objectives of this investigation were to determine if row spacing of maize influence corn rootworm survival, larval injury, and yield. Field experiments were conducted at two locations in eastern part of Croatia with natural infestation of corn rootworms: Gunja and Soljani, in 2004 and 2005. Treatments were row spacing of 70 and 50 cm. Results showed that larval survival was not significantly different in 50 cm compared to 70 cm rows. Root injury was significantly higher in 50 cm compared to 70 cm rows only in 2004, while in 2005 there were no significant differences. Yield of maize grain was not significantly different in 50 cm compared to 70 cm rows. Medium negative correlation between number of larvae and yield was determined as well as medium positive correlation between damages on roots and yield of maize grain. Reducing the row spacing in maize field from 70 cm to 50 cm can affect the injury caused by larval feeding on maize roots.
