Role of mesozooplanton grazers (Penilia avirostris, Acartia clausi) during PAL1 and PAL2 cruises in the Gulf of Trieste (northern Adriatic)
Zooplankton herbivory during the periods of the PAL1 (September 1994) and PAL2 (June 1995) cruises was investigated using the gut fluorescence method in the Gulf of Trieste (northern Adriatic). The dominant cladoceran Penilia avirostris and the dominant copepod Acartia clausi were chosen for assessing the grazing impact. During the PAL1 cruise Penilia avirostris grazed up a considerable amount (20-80 %) of the chlorophyll a available in the surface layer. The grazing impact of the dominant mesozooplanktonic grazer Acartia clausi during the PAL2 was almost always lower than 5 % of the total available chlorophyll a.
