Determinants of public opinion on sentences and their preference for different types of sentences
The aim of study was to examine the sociodemographic variables, crime attributions and sentencing goals as determinants of opinions on sentences and preference of sentence for burglary. Data (N=1004) were analyzed by discriminant analysis. Depending on the type of dependent variable canonic correlation related to the first significant function ranged from .25 to .36 while classification results showed that in average from 49% to 66.1% of cases were correctly classified. Definition of first function showed to be related to the type of dependent variable, but in each case it was mostly defined by punishment or rehabilitation as sentencing goals
