Epidemiology of nonmelanoma and melanoma skin cancer in Zagreb, Croatia
The purpose of this retrospective and hospital-based study was to evaluate the epidemiology of non-melanoma and melanoma skin cancer in University Department of Dermatology and Venereology, Clinical Hospital Centre Zagreb, during 2003 to 2006. There are population based results of 2911 cases of skin tumors in 2402 patients out of 16938 biopsies recorded in Dermatohistopathology Laboratory of University Department of Dermatology and Venereology, Zagreb University Hospital Centre during years 2003 to 2006. We registered all newly diagnosed invasive and in situ skin cancers. Histopathology record forms were used. Basocellular carcinoma (2002), planocellular carcinoma (533), melanoma (46) and cutaneous lymphoma (35) in histopathology materials were from the greatest interest. Other, less frequent tumors were mentioned. We studied number of tumours, differences in age, sex, localization. During observed period no increase in total number was registered: 4305 ; 4202 ; 4116 ; 4315. Our results showed that skin tumors are mostly found in older population (median of age 71 year). No significant differences were found between sex, for an exception of year 2006 in adult age group. As expected, skin tumors were mostly found in sun-exposed areas with some specific localizations of individual tumor type. Our results are comparable to recent literature data.
