Study of the mechanical properties and morphology of iPP/SiO2/PP-g-MA nanocomposites

Morphology-property relationships of the ternary nanocomposites isotactic polypropylene/silica/polypropylene grafted with maleic anhydride (iPP/SiO2/PP-g-MA) were compared with those of corresponding binary iPP/SiO2 nanocomposites. The samples of the nanocomposites were prepared by melt mixing in the Brabender kneading chamber followed by compression moulding and characterised by torque rheometry, tensile measurements, measurements of impact strength and scanning electron microscopy. The role of untreated and treated SiO2 as well as PP-g-MA on processability, mechanical and morphological properties is discussed, and their combined effects were examined at certain composition ranges.
