Bishop Euphrasius and the Iconographic Program of the Porec Cathedral
The paper deals with the iconographic program of the apse in the cathedral church in Porec (Istria) and its connection to the contemporary theological disputes as well as the role of the bishop Euphrasius in the forming of the mosaic decoration. The images in Euphrasiana could and have been interpreted in many ways. Their messages contain doctrinal, devotional and private concerns, some of the authors aslo stressed the political issues which I sincerely doubt. This is primarily to be observed in connection with the Three Chapters controversy that has been many times used as a main « ; doctrinal content» ; displayed through the mosaic program. The paper argue with this possibilities examining the date and historical context of rebuilding of the basilica, the person and role of Euphrasius, the historical data and the iconography of the mosaics in the context of the mid 6th century art.
