Venetian Lion : Representation and Perception of Power in North AAdriatic Provinces
The paper will deal with the role and perception of lion – visualized in different forms – as a symbol of religious belief and wisdom that motivated and justified the Venetians to achieve and display wealth and power in the provinces. The focus is based mainly on the territories of upper Adriatic region (Friuli, Venezia Giulia, Istria and Kvarner) and on the sculptures displayed in the public places as visible signs of political, cultural and economic domination. Among different forms and usages of lion figure, one was very prominent and important in the urban public space – “ bocca di leon” – also promoted by Venetian government in provinces. Of special interest is the connection between a figure and architectural frame and how the two elements correlated. The interest is also put on the way these « ; signs» ; were perceived by different classes in different periods from 13th to 17th century and what testimonies do we find in the written documents and texts regarding the usage of this symbol.
