Sažetak
The shallow aquifer of Varaždin region is located in NW part of Croatia and represents the source of potable water for public water supply of the city Varaždin and surrounding settlements. The aquifer is composed of gravel and sand with variable portions of silt and it is formed during Pleistocene and Holocene as the result of accumulation processes of the Drava River. Favourable hydrogeological conditions enabled development of three pumping sites – Varaždin, Bartolovec and Vinokovšćak. Natural groundwater quality is good but in the surrounding area of the Varaždin pumping site, has been observed high concentration of nitrates, nitrite, ammonia, orthophosphate, heavy metals (Ni, Pb), phenols and microbiological pollution. High concentrations of NO3-, NO2-, NH4+, PO43-, Ni, Pb and present of fecal bacteria in the shallow aquifer at the Varaždin pumping site led to gradual decreasing of groundwater abstraction rate and directed the majority of abstraction to other pumping sites.
