Impact of the agricultural production on groundwater quality of the Varaždin alluvial aquifer - Croatia
The study area is located in north-western part of Croatia. It is quite developed region where agricultural production is the most important economic branch. In that respect, one of the key factors was certainly the abundance of groundwater accumulated in Quaternary aquifer. Its natural quality complies with Croatian drinking water standards, but during the years inadequate land use management took its toll, which became obvious during 1970s when high concentration of nitrates in groundwater was noticed for the first time. Such conditions led to significant reduction of groundwater abstraction quantity at Varaždin pumping site, which was the main source of drinking water in the past. From 2004 to 2006, groundwater samples were taken on several occasions in order to get the insight in spatial distribution of nitrates in groundwater. Also, application of groundwater flow model has been proved once again as convenient tool for delineating pumping site catchment areas.
