Road network quality of the management unit Piščetak - GIS analysis

The establishment of primary forest road infrastructure (all forest roads and public roads that may be used in forest management) is one of the key assumptions for proper management of forest ecosystems. Classical forest openness, combined with skidding distances, is a typical indicator of the quality of the existing primary forest transport system. In recent years, relative forest openness has been frequently used to assess the quality of the existing primary forest transport system, together with the efficiency coefficient of individual forest roads, the efficiency coefficient of the primary forest transport system, methods of buffer zones, other values, methods and GIS analysis. This study presents a GIS analysis of the existing primary forest road infrastructure in the management unit Piščetak (following the updating of the cadastre of forest and public roads) for skidding distances of 150, 200 and 250 m. The efficiency coefficient is calculated for each road and, based on the traffic load the category of the road is determined. Newly opened areas for each version of the skidding distance are defined and new forest road routes proposed. Road network optimisation is based on timber extraction using skidders.
