Probabilistic Evaluation of Shear Diaphragm Design Methods
The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the safety index  for serviceability limit state, and for ultimate limit state of a shear diaphragm. The shear diaphragm is made of light gauge cold formed metal with trapezoidal cross section connected by fasteners. Two design methods, Schardt/Strehl and Bryan/Davies, as recommended by DIN 18807 and ECCS, were compared in the study. A wide range of practical design situations were considered (e.g. different cross-sections of trapezoidal sheets, different length/width ratios). Statistical data and appropriate probability distribution functions of basic variables for resistance and action were taken from own research. The reliability analysis was performed using modern reliability methods, in which the formulation of the limit state functions was consistent with the underlying design criteria. Safety indices for various failure modes were compared. It was found that the safety indices are very uneven and in some cases they are very low.
