The effects of crystal size on the Raman spectra of nanophased CdSxSe1-x, TiO2, and GaAs
We report on the application of Raman scattering as a probe for the evolution of crystalline size and distribution of nanosized particles. Small physical dimensions of the nanosized particles affects on position of the low-frequency Raman (LFR) band of the acoustical modes and, through a relaxation of the q=0 selection rule, lead to shift and broading of the first order Raman line of the optical modes. Using the LFR mode, a methodology for particle size and particle distribution was discussed and tested on CdSxSe1-x and TiO2 nanocrystals. The results were compared with the grain size distribution obtained by small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) and high-resolution electron microscopy (HREM).
