The Specific use of GPS in Maritime Search and Rescue Operations
Although maritime traffic is known as a very safe traffic, maritime accidents with casualties are frequently happening at sea. Those accidents could happen in coastal navigation near the coast line or in ocean navigation at open sea.The efficiency of the undertaken search and rescue operations at sea depends on many different factors , among which the data defining the momentary position of afflicted persons at sea are of utmost importance .Rescue operation at sea precede search operations , which are carried out by specialised services , appropriate ships, aircrafts and helicopters. The basic intention of this paper is to present the possible significant reduction of person/object searching time period at sea by the specific use of GPS and AIS in the survival crafts. For that reason the paper aims at nalysing the possibility to equip life boats with GPS and AIS what , in the case of maritime accident , enables a fast detection of persons in danger located at survival crafts and a significant improvement of search and rescue operations at sea.The system analysis is carried out at a full mission bridge navigational simulator "Transas Navi Trainer Professional 4000" which is installed at the Faculty of Maritime Studies of the University of Rijeka.
