Evaluation of cellular effects of pulsed and continuous wave radiofrequency radiation

The study was aimed to evaluate weather continuous wave (CW) and Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) modulated signal of mobile phones radiofrequency fields have influence on proliferation and colony forming ability (CFA) of Chinese hamster lung cells, cell line V79 cells. Cells were exposed for 1, 2 and 3 hours both to the 935 MHz CW and to the 915 MHz frequency GSM field in gigahertz transversal electromagnetic mode cell (GTEM) equipped with signal generator. Hellwet Packard HP8657A signal generator was used to generate CW 935 MHz frequency field, whereas Anritzu MS2711B spectrum analyzer with tracking generator and Micro devices RF 3146 power amplifier module generated GSM modulated frequency of 915 MHz. Averaged specific absorption rate (SAR) was 0.12 for CW 935 MHz and 0.23 W/kg for GSM modulated 915 MHz field. To determine cell growth, V79 samples were plated in concentration of 1x104cells per milliliter nutrient medium. Cells raised in a humified atmosphere at 37 °C in 5% CO2. Cell proliferation was determined by cell counts for each hour of exposure during five post-exposure days. To identify colony-forming ability, cells were cultivated in concentration of 40 cells/ ml medium and incubated as above. Colony forming ability for each hour of exposure was defined by colony counts on the 7th post-exposure day. In comparison to the control cell samples, growth curve of CW irradiated cells showed significant decrease after 3 hours of exposure on the 3rd post-exposure day. GSM modulated exposed cell samples showed significant decrease after 3 hours of exposure on the 2nd and 3rd post-exposure day. CFA of CW and GSM modulated exposed cells did not significantly differ from the matched controls. The applied radiofrequency fields have shown comparable effect on cell culture growth and CFA of V79 cells.
