Impact of Adaptive Airfoils on Wind Turbine Working Characteristics
This paper deals with the simulation results and investigation procedure on adaptive airfoils applied to wind turbines. A flexible airfoil skin is attached to the stiff airfoil core and allows deformation of the geometry due to pressure field change. The leading edge of the airfoil is made as a flexible structure and attached to the blade element. The rest of the airfoil is stiff and follows the theoretical form of the airfoil shape. This results in a change of airfoil aerodynamic characteristics or wind turbine power regulation. No additional energy or moving parts need to be applied. The response to flow changes is very fast, almost instantaneous. As a result, better power traction is expected in the power gap between the pitch and the stall power regulation. Preliminary flow and elastic deformation are investigated with CFD/FSI analysis followed by simulation of working characteristics of wind turbine with adaptive airfoils. This investigation can be taken further ; for example, basic wind tunnel investigations with adaptive airfoil sections can be performed. Better wind turbine efficiency is expected for future application possibilities, particularly in small machines.
