Cytogenetic monitoring of workers exposed to some organic solvents
Cytogenetic analysis of peripheral blood lymphocytes was used to compare 30 female shoe workers exposed to toluene and benzene, and 20 subjects selected from the general population not exposed to particular mutagenic or carcinogenic agents (control group). Frequencies of damaged cells, including gaps, breaks, and rearrangements were scored for both groups. The incidence of chromosomal aberrations (particularly chromatid gaps and breaks) in the exposed group was significantly higher 2.91% than in the control group 0.90%, (p<0, 001). There were no statistically significant differences for chromosome aberrations in subgroups characterised according to smoking. Neither was there a significant relation between the working period or age in the group exposed to toluene and frequency of chromosomal aberrations. Taken together, these data suggest that, on a population basis, increased frequencies of aberrations are an indication of exposure, a factor which increases the risk to cancer and genetic ill health.
