A study of the thermal stability of Fe(IO3)3 by 57Fe Moessbauer, FT-IR and Raman spectroscopies

The thermal decomposition of polycrystalline Fe(IO3)3 at temepratures up to 600 oC has been monitored by spectroscopic techniques. The 57Fe Mössbauer spectrum of Fe(IO3)3 showed a single absorption peak at room temperature. A magnetic splitting component of small intensity appeared after heating Fe(IO3)3 to a maximum temperature of 370 oC, while singlet completely disappeared from 57Fe Mössbauer spectrum after heating Fe(IO3)3 to a 470 oC. a-Fe2O3 was found as the solid product of the thermal decomposition of Fe(IO3)3. FT-IR and laser Raman spectra were also discussed.
