Self-disclosure to parents: Adolescents' views
Parenting which enhances child’ s well-being and development has been of great interest to psychologists. Positive parenting was defined as parental behaviour based on the best interests of the child that is nurturing, non-violent, provides structure and recognition and enables empowerment (Council of Europe, 2007). Within the field of parenting adolescents, empirical findings showed that parental knowledge about adolescent’ s daily activities, feelings and concerns was linked to numerous measures of adolescent adjustment, including adolescent’ s well-being (Shek, 2006). Stattin and Kerr (2000) found that this parental knowledge came mainly from child’ s disclosure which involves spontaneously revealing the information to parents without any prompting. However, we hypothesized that there were some parental behaviours that could either inhibit or facilitate child’ s self-disclosure. In this study, focus groups were conducted to thoroughly investigate the adolescents’ perceptions of potential parental behaviours, which discourage or encourage them to disclose. Four groups of 13 and 14 year old boys and girls participated in the study. The participants were asked to recall a situation in which they disclosed to their parent and to name any of parental behaviour occurred that encouraged them to do so. The participants were also invited to recall a situation in which they refused to disclose to their parent and to report about parental behaviours that discouraged them from disclosing. Group discussion was solicited and directed by moderator. In analysis of adolescents’ responses, mentioned parental behaviours were categorized as “ initiators” / positive reactions to self-disclosure, and “ inhibitors” / negative reactions to self-disclosure. The findings are discussed in terms of contribution to understanding precursors of positive communication between parents and adolescents.
