Reactions of Niobium and Tantalum Hexanuclear Halide Clusters with Cadmium(II) Halides. Diamagnetic and Paramagnetic Clusters with Semiconducting Properties

The diamagnetic [Ta_6Cl_12(H_2O)_6][CdCl_2X_2]x12H_2O (X = Br, I) (1 and 2) and [M_6Br_12(H_2O)_6][CdBr_2X_2]x12H_2O (M = Nb, Ta; X = Cl, Br, I) (3-8) clusters as well as paramagnetic [(Ta_6Cl_12)Cl(H_2O)_5][CdBr_4]x6H_2O (9) have been isolated. The crystal structures have been determined for [Nb_6Br_12(H_2O)_6][CdBr_4]x12H_2O (4), [Ta_6Br_12(H_2O)_6][CdBr_4]x12H_2O (7) and [(Ta_6Cl_12)Cl(H_2O)_5][CdBr_4]x6H_2O (9). Octahedral cluster cations [M_6Br_12(H_2O)_6]^2+ in (4) and (7) and [(Ta_6Cl_12)Cl(H_2O)_5]^2+ in (9), together with [CdBr_4]^2- anion as discrete units are main structural building blocks.
