Lipophilic toxin profile in Mytilus galloprovinciallis collected in the Eastern Adriatic (Croatian waters)
Regular and frequent analysis of shellfish toxicity after national monitoring program was established revealed that DSP toxicity events along the Croatian coast with more frequency in Northern Adriatic while its appearance in Southern Adriatic is rare. The most of toxicity events occurred in the late summer and autumn period. With the aim to determine DSP toxin profile, which caused toxicity events, we analyzed positive mouse bioassay samples collected in a period from 2004 to 2007 on LC-MS/MS on lipophilic toxins. The obtained results showed okadaic acid (OA) and yessotoxin (YTX) as a main toxin, which could be attributed to the positive mouse bioassay. . For the first time is evidenced presence of gymnodimine and spirolides in Croatian mussel. Phytoplankton community structure analysis revealed intensive bloom of Dinophysis fortii associated with high concentration of OA in the mussels. Occurrence of Gymnodinium spp. and Alexandrium ostenfeldii in the phytoplankton community preceded the presence of gymnodimine and spirolides in mussels.
