Welding dowels in the transversal cross-section of solid wood
Welding wood is the mutual joining of two or more elements of woods without the use of glue or other type of adhesive material. With the aid of rotation and pressing the dowel in the bore, during friction temperature rises causing welding. The superficial surface of the wood in contact melt (lignin and hemicelluloses) while the cellulose fibers become intertwined. During cooling such welded joints achive a satisfactory strength within 15 minutes following rotation and friction. Thanks to the use of only natural materials, such joined products are ecologically acceptable. In the event of recycling or incineration, the welded products as well as natural woods do not release toxic components. In the welding process, there occurs smoke which is also ecologically acceptable, is not dangerous to human health and does not pollute the environment. This paper outlines the present global knowledge and results of welding wood gained at the Faculty of Forestry in Zagreb
