Cationic-surfactant response of ion-selective, N, N, N', N'-tetracyclohexyl-3-oxapentanediamide-based PVC membrane electrode
An ion-selective electrode containing the Ca2+ carrier N, N, N', N, -tetracyclohexyl-3-oxapentanediamide (ETH 129) was used ro investigate cationic response in solutions of some commonly used cationic surfactants. The carrier Iras incorporated in a PVC membrane containing o-nitrophenyl octyl ether (o-NPOE) as plasticizer, tetrahydrofuran (THF) as solvent and potassium tetrakis (4-chlorophenyl)-borate (KTpClPB) as lipophilic anionic site. A graphite-PTFE electrode (Ruzicka Selectrode) and platinum metallic electrode were used as conducting substrates. The electrodes described served as end-point indicators for potentiometric titration of the cationic surfactants studied. A standard solution of sodium dodecylsulfate was used as titrant. The influence of pH and several inorganic and organic cations was also studied. The electrode was successfully used for potentiometric titration of cationic surfactants in several commercial products.
