Improved Cross-Section Homogenisation for Research Reactor Criticality Calculations

A proposed sequence of possible transitional cycles from a HEU (High Enriched Uranium) standard core to a compact LEU (Low Enriched Uranium) core was analysed using the Monte Carlo code KENO–Va [1] and a nodal diffusion code. It has revealed bigger discrepancies in core reactivity estimation between these two approaches for heterogeneous (HEU_LEU) cores than for either HEU only or LEU only cores, suggesting inadequacy of the standard cross-section processing approach for heterogeneous cores. In this work we have performed studies on one-dimensional lattices to investigate possible improvement of an existing cross-section homogenisation approach by employing equivalence theory concepts [2,3].
