Dermatologic indicators of coronary risk

The aim of the investigation has been to determine the prevalence of baldness, hairiness, hair graying and diagonal earlobe crease in coronary and noncoronary male patients aged 40-59 years. The prevalence of the aforementioned indicators has been analysed in 200 patients admitted for the first, nonfatal myocardial infarction and in 200 control patients admitted to the same hospital with noncardiac diagnoses and no clinical signs of coronary heart disease. All the examinees were divided in two age groups: 1) from 40 to 49 and 2) from 50 to 59 years of age. Each group consisted of 100 coronary and 100 noncoronary patients. The number of baldheaded persons was considerably higher among coronary patients (45% vs. 31% ; and 56% vs. 39%), particularly so for baldness involving the scalp vertex (16% vs. 9% ; 22% vs. 15%). The hairy pearsons were also more prevalent among the coronary patients in both age groups (84% vs. 63% ; 22% vs. 15%). The number of grey-haired was significantly higher among coronary patients in the 40-49 years group (80% vs. 69%). Diagonal earlobe crease was more prevalent in both groups of coronary patients (52% vs. 34% ; 74% vs. 34%), as well. These data support the hypothesis that baldness, hairiness and hair graying in men under the age of 50 years as well as the presence of the diagonal earlobe crease in both age groups is associated with an increased risk of coronary heart disease.
