Different Aspect of Professional Competencies for Work with Children and Youth with Behavioral Disorders

Professionals of different vocations work with children and youth with behavioral disorders, especially with juvenile delinquents during the juvenile justice process. We can generally outline several professions that have their role in the system of interventions in this area. They are social pedagogues, social workers, psychologists and pedagogues as helping professions, but also attorneys and judges who are not primarily helping professions. In this paper we shall present some results of the pilot research of the project “ Scientific Establishment and Development of Social Pedagogy in the Republic of Croatia” that is carried out on the Department of Behavioral Disorders, Faculty of Special Education and Rehabilitation Sciences (University of Zagreb, Croatia) and is financed by the Croatian Ministry of Science, Education and Sport. All professionals who work with children and youth with behavioral disorders have been asked about their perception on needed professional knowledge and skills for their successful work. Special questioner was designed especially for the purpose of this pilot research. Sample includes N=290 professionals of which 60% of them can be classified as helping professionals (N=173) and 40% who are not mainly helping professional by vocation (N=117). Discriminative analysis was used to determine differences in needed skills and knowledge between helping professionals and non-helping professionals, and hi-square tests to determine differences for the need of additional education in counseling and psychotherapy as well as for broader interdisciplinary knowledge. Results will be presented in the context of measured differences and guidelines for future education curricula.
