Organic agriculture in the Republic of Croatia
The aim of this paper was to analyse the development of organic agriculture in the Republic of Croatia over the past ten years. In the Republic of Croatia there is a great share of uncultivated and fallow land, high percentage of unemployed young population and high quality fertile soils. Despite those facts the number of organic farmers is much smaller in comparison to other European countries. According to authors the reasons for such situation can be found by close examination of socio-geographic conditions inherited from the period of socialism. The authors compared quantitative and qualitative indicators, number of registered organic farmers and the organic production area, by counties. Today, organic farmers in Croatia are self-organised into guilds. Their products are sold on local markets, in specialised shops, by Internet or home delivery. The foundation of the first organic agriculture cluster is one of the motivating factors for the future development of this segment of agriculture in Croatia.
