Transformation of indole-3-ethanol to new conjugates in plants
On feeding with indole-3-ethanol (tryptophol), many plants and microorganisms convert the alcohol to non-polar esters. Particularly large amounts of these conjugates were formed by the basidiomycete Craterellus cornucopioides (L.) ex Pers. which was, thus, chosen to supply the quantities necessary for structural studies. Chromatographic purification afforded two esters, for which C-13 NMR spectra suggested the structures, indole-3-ethyl oleate and indole-3-ethyl dehydrocrepenynate. Authentic standards were synthesized and showed identical C-13 NMR spectra.
