Investigation of durability of polyester shade materials in natural environment
Although PES fibers are known as materials relatively resistant to UV radiation, degradations can occur if the fibers are exposed to direct sunlight. Photochemical reactions in PES fibers are initialized by traces of structurally alien chromophores, i.e. accompanying materials as titanium, iron, peroxides and compounds containing aromatic or carbonyl groups. The resistance of PES shade fabrics (for awnings, parasols) was investigated in natural application conditions. The investigations were performed on commercial printed fabrics improved by various water and oil resistance treatments. The materials were exposed to ageing in natural environment, i.e. to the influence of sunshine, the atmosphere and pollutants for periods of 1, 2, 3 and 6 months. The ageing was determined by testing of relevant characteristics of textile materials. The investigation results indicate that ageing in natural conditions occurs at all samples, and that the degradation rate depends on the previous treatment.
