The Modifications of Cotton and Polycotton Fabrics during Frequent Laundering
Proper laundering of textiles is done using a whole spectrum of detergent ingredients, mechanical agitation, at adequate temperature and time. Frequent laundering causes fibre surface modifications, as the result of fibre swelling capacity in the alkaline detergent bath, which is augmented by mechanical agitation. The intensity of modification depends upon the laundry bath composition as well as upon the composition and construction of the textiles treated. The paper is focused on the modifications of cotton and polycotton fabrics for workwear after frequent industrial laundering. The objective evaluation of the damage after 25 cycles was done by measuring breaking strength and tear resistance. Surface modifications were monitored by streaming potential measurements, as well as by measuring incrustations content. The assessment of pilling due to different composition of the textiles was done by standard method and tested in comparison with the replicas. The investigation resulted in a new perspective of textiles characterization after frequent laundering.
