Degradarion of Different Types of Textile Dyes by UV/FENTON Process

Organic synthetic dyes are widely produced and used today. Wastewater from dye manufacturing and application industries presents a special ecological problem due to intensive coloration and high content of different toxic and carcinogenic compounds, unacceptable for the environment and human health. So, dyes have to be removed from dye wastewater before discharge. However, traditional treatment methods (adsorption, coagulation/flocculation) mainly transfer the contaminants from wastewater to solid wastes. Furthermore, due to complex chemical structure of organic synthetic dyes they are mainly resistance to destruction by biological treatment methods. Therefore, advanced oxidation processes seemed to be sustainable and cleaner technology to decolorize and minimize organic dyes content in the wastewater. In this paper, the photochemical decolourization and mineralization of different types of textile dyes, C. I. Reactive Black 1, C. I. Direct Red 23, C. I. Acid Blue 25, C. I. Basic Red 1 and C. I. Mordant Orange 1, in aqueous solutions using UV/Fenton process have been studied. The effect of initial dye concentration on dye degradation by UV/Fenton process at constant concentration of Fe2+ and H2O2, UV irradiation characteristics, pH and temperature in reaction time of 60 minutes was determined. Treatment efficiency of the investigated advanced oxidation system was assessed in terms of the environmental parameter total organic carbon (TOC) and UV/VIS spectrophotometric measurements (absorbance at maximal wavelength ; A max). By assuming a pseudo first order reaction kinetics of dye degradation in water, decolourization and mineralization rate constants were determined. The rate and the extent of degradation are strongly dependent on the molecular size and the chemical structure of dyes. It is suggested that UV/Fenton type reactions are viable methods for the treatment of textile dyes, according to the high levels of colour and TOC removal obtained for some type of dyes.
