Remote sensing and Biomonitoring techniques as health and environmental risks early warning tools
Air pollution is significant health and environmental problem. Identification and quantification of heavy metal as atmospheric pollutant (even in the traces) is especially important for spatially and cumulative long term monitoring of heavy metal concentrations in the air with purpose of reduction and/or prevention of health and ecological risks. This is why reliable early warning methodology on air pollution and associated risks represents a challenge for scientific community and entire society. As a response to the concern over the accumulation of heavy metals in ecosystems, and their impacts on the environment and human health, the biomonitoring application proved to be reliable and cost effective tool for risk identification and reduction. Biomonitoring and appropriate analytic methods like instrumental neutron activation analyses are easy to implement for monitoring long-term and large-scale changes in heavy-metal deposition providing us with effects-based information on the state of the environment and its changes. Results from adequate biomonitoring allow examination of both spatial and temporal trends in heavy metal concentration/ deposition, and identification of areas where there is high deposition of heavy metals from long-range transport and local sources. Optimization in selection of reference sites for Biomonitoring sampling locations could be done properly only by using Digital Ortho Photo Images and Satellite Images with high resolution. This paper will describe our experience in air pollution risk management, early warning strategy, prevention and management of emergency situations by using remote sensing and Biomonitoring techniques as a health and environmental risks early warning tools.
